  • Cognitive Training May Cut Dementia Risk for Decades

CLOVERDALE CA 95425, CA, UNITED STATES, March 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Cognitive Training May Cut Dementia Risk for Decades
As populations age, dementia remains a major public health challenge. While there is no cure for dementia, evidence suggests that certain types of mental exercise can support long term brain health. Research following older adults over many years has found that activities that improve brain processing speed can have lasting benefits. Processing speed exercises strengthen visual attention and reaction time, helping the brain respond more quickly to information. Older adults who regularly practiced these skills were significantly less likely to develop dementia than those who did not, with benefits lasting for years.

Matthew Glavach, Ph.D., has drawn on this body of research in his book “Brain Fitness: Processing Speed and Reaction Time“. The book offers engaging exercises that emphasize rhythm, speed, and quick decision making. He wrote the book as an accessible alternative to computerized cognitive training programs, which can be costly and difficult for some older adults to use.

  • 2026 May Be a Turning Point for New Home Buyers — and Log Homes Offer a Unique Opportunity

Mortgage rates are at a five-year low, and costs for new construction are steadily declining. It’s a great time to build, and log homes offer something unique.

MONTROSE, CO, UNITED STATES, March 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — For many Americans hoping to purchase a home, the last several years have been marked by high prices, limited inventory, and rising interest rates. However, new data suggest that 2026 could represent a rare opportunity in the housing market—particularly for buyers willing to think beyond conventional home construction.

According to recent data from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the price gap between new construction and existing homes is now narrower than ever. In some regions, resale homes are even commanding higher prices than newly built properties. This shift is the result of several converging factors, including builder incentives, smaller home footprints, and increased availability of newly built housing.

At the same time, mortgage conditions are beginning to ease. A recent CNBC report notes that mortgage demand surged as buyers reacted to the lowest interest rates in four years. Combined with improved builder flexibility, these conditions have created what NAHB describes as an “unusual buying window” for prospective homeowners.

For buyers considering a custom home, these conditions may present an especially compelling opportunity.

Log homes in particular offer a distinctive alternative to conventional construction. Rather than purchasing a mass-produced home in a competitive resale market, buyers can design and build a residence that reflects their personal vision, lifestyle, and long-term plans.

Companies like Frontier Log Homes are seeing growing interest from buyers who want something different from the typical suburban floor plan. Log homes are valued not only for their craftsmanship and natural beauty, but also for the sense of permanence and character they bring to a property.

One factor contributing to their appeal is flexibility. Many prospective homeowners are exploring log cabin kits to customize their homes while maintaining greater control over costs and timelines. These kits allow buyers to choose from a variety of floor plans and styles, ranging from compact cabins to expansive family homes designed for entertaining or multigenerational living.

In today’s market, where resale homes often come with outdated layouts, renovation costs, or bidding wars, building a log home can be a strategic alternative. Buyers can prioritize features that matter most to them, such as open living spaces, energy efficiency, and durable materials that stand the test of time.

Beyond the financial considerations, log homes also offer an aesthetic and lifestyle advantage. Their natural wood construction creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that many homeowners find difficult to replicate in traditional construction. Whether situated in mountain landscapes, wooded properties, or rural acreage, log homes offer a connection to nature that resonates with buyers seeking a slower, more intentional pace of life.

If current market trends continue, 2026 may prove pivotal for new home construction. For buyers looking to take advantage of shifting prices, improved financing conditions, and the opportunity to build something truly unique, log homes may be among the most compelling options available today.

    Independent Evaluation by International Jury
All entries were evaluated through a blind judging process conducted by an international panel of industry professionals selected from IAA’s global judging network. Jurors represent expertise across fashion design, creative direction, textile innovation, branding and education.

  • Toledo Edison Announces Upcoming Rate Changes for Spring 2026

Toledo Edison customers could face $37 more per month by summer due to Winter Storm Fern and PJM capacity changes. Lock in a fixed rate now.

TOLEDO, TX, UNITED STATES, March 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Experts Say Locking In a Fixed Rate Now Could Save Households Money

Electricity customers in the Toledo Edison service area may soon pay more for their power. Analysts at OHEnergyRatings.com say a mix of cold weather, rising natural gas prices, and higher capacity charges could push Toledo Edison’s Price to Compare (PTC) rate up twice before summer gets fully underway. Together, these increases could raise an average monthly PTC bill by $37.

You can find the full article here: https://www.ohenergyratings.com/about-us/press/toledo-edison-customers-face-higher-electric-bills-this-spring

Winter Storm Fern Pushed Natural Gas Prices Higher

January’s Winter Storm Fern sent natural gas demand soaring across the country this winter. Energy demand from LNG exports and data centers also added to the burden. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that natural gas power generation in the Lower 48 states jumped 14%. At the Henry Hub, the country’s key natural gas pricing hub, the spot price hit $9.03 per mmBTU on January 28. Prices in the Northeast spiked even higher, topping $40 in some markets.

By month’s end, the February NYMEX futures contract for natural gas closed at $7.46 per mmBTU, nearly double the January price.

Cold temperatures gripped most of Ohio through much of February. Though gas prices relented, cold weather drained stored natural gas supplies below their five-year average.

Unfortunately, higher natural gas costs charged to electric generators are often delayed from showing up on consumers’ electricity bills for a month or two. As a result, high February natural gas prices may affect Toledo electricity rates in April.

What History Tells Us About April Rate Changes

Analysts studied four years of rate data for five Ohio investor-owned utilities. They found clear patterns that signal higher bills ahead:

    · Over the past four years, when utility PTC rates changed in April, they rose by an average of a little more than 2%.
    · First Energy utilities, including Toledo Edison, tend to raise rates the most.
    · AEP Ohio and Duke Energy tend to raise rates the least.
    · A 2% hike would raise the PTC rate by about 2 cents per kWh, bringing Toledo Edison’s rate to roughly 11.718 cents per kWh.

Ohio households use about 850 kWh per month on average. Starting in April, PTC customers paying higher Toledo electricity rates could pay about $17 more per month on their supply charge.

A Second Rate Hike Likely in June

The price increases do not stop there. Last year, the first capacity auction rate added an average of 2.2 cents per kWh to Ohio utility rates overnight.

A new capacity auction rate takes effect June 1, 2026. While far more expensive than the previous year, PJM recently agreed to extend the existing price collar for two more years. However, like last year, it could add another 2 cents per kWh to the Toledo Edison PTC rate. This would push the rate to roughly 14 cents per kWh, adding another $20 per month for the typical household on the default rate.

In short, Toledo Edison PTC customers could pay $37 more on the first day of summer for the same amount of electricity than they did on the first day of spring.

Toledo Edison Customers Can Act Now

OHEnergyRatings.com urges Toledo Edison customers that now is the perfect time to do an apples to apples Ohio rate comparison of fixed-rate plans before Toledo Edison’s PTC prices rise. In most cases, customers can find a better deal on electricity for their homes by shopping for steady, fixed rate plans from certified retail energy suppliers.

“Consumers already know that data center development is going to keep raising supply rates,” said Karl Trollinger, CEO of Electricity Ratings. ” But we’re now seeing that as this happens, the Toledo Edison Price to Compare rates could grow more volatile. With affordability at the top of consumers’ minds, steady and predictable pricing from fixed plans makes it easier to budget monthly energy bills. Customers who lock in a fixed-rate plan now can avoid these future rate increases.”

OHEnergyRatings.com is a website operated by Electricity Ratings, LLC.

Electricity Ratings, LLC operates a network of energy shopping websites serving 17 states and 56 utilities, providing our energy comparison and ratings service to over 80 million customers. We provide our customers with the power to choose the best providers through our consumer reviews platform which provides a reliable, unbiased source of valuable consumer insight. And we back that up by offering in-depth energy company service analysis, personalized recommendations, and practical advice. Our mission is to help consumers harness the power of information to find, compare, and buy electricity and energy services from the best providers.

  • New York Workers’ Comp Attorney Warns: March 20 Electronic Mandate Gives Insurers a New Weapon to Deny Medical Care

The NY WCB now requires electronic RFA-2 filings. Tomack Law warns injured workers that insurers can use this transition to suspend benefits faster than ever.

Insurance companies will absolutely use this mandate to delay critical medical treatment. If you have an active claim, you need a private litigator monitoring the carrier’s actions.”

MOUNT KISCO, NY, UNITED STATES, March 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Starting today, March 20, 2026, the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board will officially require all Requests for Further Action (Form RFA-2) to be filed electronically. Paper forms will no longer be accepted or processed. This administrative shift, which comes just weeks after the WCB reopened its Queens office for in-person appointments, directly impacts insurance carriers, employers, and every individual with an active workers’ compensation case in the state.

While the transition aims to modernize the system, it introduces immediate risks for unrepresented claimants. Form RFA-2 is the exact mechanism insurance carriers use to petition the Board to suspend wage benefits or dispute medical care. This new electronic mandate allows insurers to file these aggressive actions faster than ever before. Injured workers navigating a workers comp claim New York without aggressive legal representation may suddenly find their medical care stalled or checks interrupted by a rapid-fire digital filing they are entirely unprepared to defend against.

“The Workers’ Compensation Board’s digital mandate is a procedural update, but insurance companies will absolutely use it to delay approvals for critical medical treatment,” said David Tomack, founder of Tomack Law. “Injured workers should not be the ones absorbing the consequences of a system change. If you have an active claim, you need a private litigator monitoring the carrier’s actions, ensuring you are not denied necessary care or wage replacement just because an insurer fired off a digital request before you could defend yourself.”

This policy shift most heavily impacts individuals injured at work in New York across high-risk occupations, including construction, healthcare, warehouse logistics, and delivery services. Anyone whose doctor is currently seeking authorization for ongoing treatment must ensure their legal representative is fully integrated into the Board’s electronic filing system. Having a dedicated New York workers compensation lawyer actively monitoring the digital docket ensures the insurance company cannot exploit the transition to withhold benefits unnoticed.

For workers whose claims have already been denied or whose benefits have been suspended, the March 20 transition adds urgency to exploring parallel avenues for income protection. Many injured New Yorkers who face stalled workers’ compensation cases qualify for Social Security Disability benefits simultaneously. A New York Social Security Disability lawyer familiar with both systems can ensure that an insurer’s electronic filing does not become a barrier to receiving any benefits at all during a prolonged dispute.

Tomack Law PLLC is a private litigation firm representing injured employees across New York City, Westchester, and Long Island. The firm specializes in overturning denied claims and securing maximum Schedule Loss of Use (SLU) settlements against insurance companies, operating on a no-win, no-fee basis. For workers with questions about how the March 20 electronic mandate affects their active case, case evaluations with an NYC workers compensation lawyer are available at tomacklaw.com or by calling (914) 500-2060.

Former World No. 4 Bianca Andreescu Claims Singles Title as Presenting Sponsor Vero Premier Properties Helps Power USTA Pro Circuit Tournament to $175,000 in Local Economic Impact

The 2026 Vero Beach International Tennis Open (VBITO), held at Grand Harbor Golf & Beach Club, concluded its milestone 5th anniversary season with record-setting attendance, a global broadcast audience exceeding 4.2 million viewers, and an estimated $175,000 in additional revenue for the City of Vero Beach. Hosted on the USTA Pro Circuit with the support of presenting sponsor Vero Premier Properties, a Signature Division of Coldwell Banker Global Luxury, the week-long celebration of world-class tennis and community spirit solidified the tournament’s reputation as one of the premier professional sporting events on Florida’s Treasure Coast.

Historic Center Court Dedication Honors Tennis Icon Ivan Lendl
The defining moment of the 2026 tournament was the official dedication of Center Court to Ivan Lendl, the eight-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 who spent 270 weeks atop the global rankings during his legendary career. The naming ceremony drew a powerful symbolic connection between the sport’s storied history and the rising stature of the VBITO. Tournament organizers noted that the dedication reflects the event’s ambition to honor the traditions of professional tennis while cultivating the next generation of talent. Every match played on the newly christened Ivan Lendl Court now carries the weight and inspiration of one of the sport’s all-time greatest competitors.

Bianca Andreescu and the Zamarripa Sisters Headline Championship Matches
Former World No. 4 Bianca Andreescu captured the singles championship, adding her name to a growing roster of elite athletes who have competed in Vero Beach. The doubles title was claimed by sisters Allura and Maribella Zamarripa in a compelling final that energized the crowd. Both champion teams received their trophies on Center Court alongside Ben Bryk and Vance Brinkerhoff of Vero Premier Properties, whose presenting sponsorship made the championship weekend possible. The trophy presentations at the Grand Dinner Dance Gala served as a fitting capstone to the week’s festivities and highlighted the deep partnership between the tournament and Vero Premier Properties.

A Week of Unforgettable Events On and Off the Court
The 2026 VBITO delivered a packed calendar that extended well beyond championship tennis. The week opened with a formal Opening Ceremony featuring a Changing of the Color Guard, welcoming remarks from Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers and Vero Beach Mayor John Cotugno, and a moving rendition of the National Anthem performed by Grand Harbor member Lou Wilkin. Social programming included a curated Fashion Show Dinner organized by Grand Harbor members Linda Kofoed and Penny Cutler, and an Art Show and Wine Social showcasing original works by more than 25 member artists. Two days of automotive exhibitions, presented by sponsor Melbourne Porsche Audi, featured Porsche showcases and high-horsepower muscle car displays that drew enthusiasts from across the region. A Pro-Am event gave tournament supporters a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share the court with professional athletes, while the popular Kids’ Day offered free admission for children under 13, complete with lessons, gifts, and the chance to rally with the pros.

Vero Premier Properties: A Sponsor Committed to Community Excellence
Among the tournament’s most impactful partnerships is its relationship with Vero Premier Properties, a Signature Division of Coldwell Banker Global Luxury and one of the Treasure Coast’s most respected luxury real estate firms. Led by Ben Bryk and Vance Brinkerhoff, Vero Premier Properties has served as a cornerstone sponsor of the VBITO, providing unwavering year-over-year support that has been instrumental in elevating the tournament to its current stature. Their commitment extends beyond financial investment: Bryk and Brinkerhoff have been visible and active participants throughout each tournament week, from courtside hospitality to the championship trophy presentations. As ambassadors for both world-class real estate and community enrichment, Vero Premier Properties embodies the tournament’s belief that Vero Beach deserves experiences that match the exceptional quality of life on the Treasure Coast.

Premier Sponsors Fuel the Tournament’s Continued Growth
Alongside Vero Premier Properties, the VBITO’s rapid ascent on the professional tennis circuit is powered by a distinguished roster of corporate and community partners. Headline sponsors for 2026 also included Melbourne Porsche Audi, Mercedes-Benz, GHO Homes, and Morgan Stanley. Their collective investment has enabled the tournament to expand its programming, elevate its production standards, attract higher-ranked competitors, and grow its global broadcast footprint to more than 4.2 million viewers worldwide.

Deep Community Roots Drive Lasting Economic and Cultural Impact
At its core, the VBITO remains a community-driven event. More than 250 volunteers contributed their time and energy across every facet of tournament operations, from courtside hospitality and guest services to event logistics and player support. Over 1,500 attendees participated in the social programming throughout the week, and more than 4,400 fans filled the grounds to watch live competition. The $175,000 in estimated additional revenue for the City of Vero Beach reinforces the tournament’s growing role as an economic catalyst for the region. Under the leadership of Grand Harbor General Manager Michael Gibson, Director of Sports Marco Osorio, Sports Committee Chair Jeanine Nestor, and Club President Tim Cutler, the VBITO has evolved from a bold local initiative into an internationally recognized event that brings civic pride and tangible economic benefit to the entire Treasure Coast.

Looking Ahead to Year Six and Beyond
With five years of momentum, a Center Court bearing the name of a tennis legend, and a growing international profile, the VBITO is positioned for its most ambitious chapter yet. Tournament organizers have described the 2026 edition as the strongest in the event’s history and are already laying the groundwork for an expanded 2027 season. Details for the sixth annual Vero Beach International Tennis Open, including dates, featured players, and new programming, will be announced later this year.
