  • WBGO’s Steven A. Williams, Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin, and Council Member Carmen De La Rosa Named JPI 2026 Honorees

Jazz Power Initiative (JPI) Syncopated Celebration 2026 recognizes jazz’s transformative, historic, and influential impact on global society and culture

Being honored by Jazz Power Initiative as part of its Syncopated Celebration on May 14 is profoundly meaningful…”
    — Steven A. Williams, President & CEO, WBGO-FM

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, March 11, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The board of Jazz Power Initiative (JPI), is pleased to announce the honorees for the Syncopated Celebration 2026 fundraiser, scheduled for May 14 at 6:00 pm at Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space, 250 West 95th Street, Manhattan.

WBGO President & CEO Steven A. Williams, who joined the iconic radio station and global jazz leader nearly six years ago, will receive the Rothman Family Syncopated Partnership Award.

Mr. Williams, a dedicated jazz enthusiast and self-described “radio guy,” credits his family’s musical legacy, especially his grandfather, who introduced him to jazz, for inspiring his passion for music and education.

As WBGO’s leader, Mr. Williams is dedicated to maintaining the station’s 47-year legacy of curating, promoting, presenting, and preserving this unique African American music genre, and honoring the creative talents who have inspired generations of musicians worldwide. Through its daily programming and knowledgeable on-air personalities, WBGO has built a global community of enthusiasts who help sustain the station’s independence.

“Being honored by Jazz Power Initiative as part of its Syncopated Celebration on May 14 is profoundly meaningful, as it recognizes not only my personal journey but the rich cultural legacy that jazz continues to inspire in all of us,” says Steven about the recognition. “This celebration embodies the spirit of creativity, community, and collaboration that defines jazz, and I am deeply grateful to stand alongside artists, educators, and leaders who are committed to uplifting this vital art form.”

This year’s Changemaker Award will be presented to Lakecia Benjamin, a six-time Grammy Award nominee, and New York-based saxophonist, arranger, composer, and educator.

Ms. Benjamin, a respected musician and bandleader who grew up in Washington Heights, is recognized for pushing musical boundaries and developing a distinctive jazz style that draws from R&B, Latin, and funk influences. The New York Times wrote, “…her sound feels rooted in tradition, yet broad enough to encompass R&B and Latin music; its pronounced funk suggests allegiances to hip-hop and dance.”

A powerhouse virtuoso, Lakecia Benjamin has performed with Clark Terry, Terri Lyne Carrington, Gregory Porter, Missy Elliott, Eli Yamin, and Alicia Keys. She studied with jazz veterans Billy Harper, Reggie Workman, Bob Stewart, and Buster Williams, and was mentored by Gary Bartz.

“I love what Jazz Power Initiative stands for and its mission,” says Lakecia. “It resonates deeply with me, especially since JPI and I are repping Washington Heights! I’m so honored to be recognized by an organization that is very special to me and to the jazz community at large.”

Council Member Carmen De La Rosa will receive the Miranda Family Champion of Arts and Culture Award in recognition of her leadership and support for Northern Manhattan’s arts and cultural landscape through legislation, discretionary funding, and capital investments.

Since entering public service, Council Member De La Rosa has advocated for economic justice and against racism and xenophobia. In 2021, she became the first Dominican woman elected to represent New York’s District 10 at City Hall, expanding her focus to include criminal justice reform, workers’ rights, affordable housing and tenant protections, climate justice, taxing the wealthy, LGBTIA rights, and other significant social justice policies.

“I am honored to be Jazz Power Initiative’s Miranda Family Champion of Arts and Culture Award recipient. Supporting organizations like Jazz Power Initiative and investing in Uptown’s artistic and cultural community uplifts the talent at the heart of our vibrant district, while removing barriers to entry for our youth. Equitable access to diverse art and cultural exploration not only brings our community together but also creates a holistic learning environment for our future leaders. Our artists, educators, and advocates make New York City a global cultural capital, and I look forward to celebrating 22 years of the incredible impact of Jazz Power Initiative,” says Council Member Carmen De La Rosa.

For 22 years, Jazz Power Initiative has addressed the need for increased in-school and afterschool arts education in the communities it serves. With the support of its staff and teaching artists, children ages 6 to 18 in upper Manhattan have benefited from free and low-cost programs in voice, piano, dance, and acting. The organization seeks to broaden these programs and reach more participants through jazz arts education and ongoing intergenerational community concerts. Events like Syncopated Celebration 2026 help raise awareness and essential funds to sustain these valuable initiatives.

Eli Yamin, aka “Dr. E,” co-founder, Managing and Artistic Director of JPI said this about this year’s honorees, and their connection to the communities JPI serves, “We are proud to honor Lakecia Benjamin, an international jazz star who grew up in Washington Heights and has supported JPI for years with her dynamic performances at our Intergenerational Jazz Power Jam series and community concerts. WBGO gave me my first job in jazz in 1986 and set the direction of my life as an artist, educator, and advocate for jazz. For 47 years, WBGO has been carrying the torch for jazz and connecting our global community from Newark to Harlem, Brooklyn to Bonn, Washington Heights to Singapore. We are proud to salute WBGO and its stalwart and supremely resourceful CEO, Steve Williams. Council Member Carmen De La Rosa has long been a fighter for our beloved uptown community to have consistent access to high-quality arts and education. I am thrilled we can honor her as our Miranda Family Champion of Arts and Culture!”

Jazz Power Initiative Syncopated Celebration 2026 is being hosted by 11-time Grammy Award-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride. The event will include performances by Christian McBride, Lakecia Benjamin, and Dr. E, as well as JPI students.

Tanya LeMelle, VP at TD Bank/VP of JPI’s Board and event chair, stated, “Through its support of the Jazz Power Initiative, TD helps young people discover their rhythm, their confidence, and their voice—an example of what being More Human truly means. Through its commitment to arts and culture across North America, TD helps amplify diverse voices and creates opportunities for the next generation of artists.”

  • Faith-based Film Features Black Gospel Singer’s Greatest Act of Worship

Film tells a story of a faith-filled choice that became Della B. Robinson’s (singer and former wife of legendary musician Ray Charles) greatest act of worship.

LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, March 11, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Hit Song Productions announces development of new faith-based drama, The Della B. Robinson Story – an inspiring account of a gifted Gospel singer who walked away from a rising career to marry legendary musician, Ray Charles, and embrace a different sort of dream. That dream, quickly devastated, teaches Della to love with wisdom, endure with dignity, and trust God with open hands.

The film begins by detailing Della’s career as a nationally recognized Gospel vocalist whose voice once filled arenas and church sanctuaries across the country touring with Gospel great Cecil Shaw. Although poised for a long and celebrated career, when she falls in love with Ray she makes a life-altering decision to step away from the spotlight to embrace what she’s always dreamed of: a husband who loves her, a baby in her arms and a home of her own. But her expectations are soon crushed.

As she manages public scrutiny of her husband’s indiscretions and drug use, she quietly supports his demanding career and faithfully navigates the challenges of motherhood—including raising Ray’s daughter from a previous relationship. She ultimately discovers that shattered expectations do not mean shattered purpose.

“When God calls you to something greater than applause, obedience to God becomes your greatest act of worship,” says the film’s Executive Producer, Lexi Lewis. “This movie honors the women whose sacrifices build legacies.”

The Della B. Robinson Story features a soul-stirring soundtrack, a redemptive storyline, and a journey of resilience, surrender, and unwavering faith—a reminder that divine calling often looks different than we expect.

The Della B. Robinson Story is being written by Robert Eisele who also penned The Great Debaters, starring and directed by Denzel Washington. The Great Debaters was Golden Globe-nominated and winner of the Image Award for Best Picture among others. Eisele brings years of experience and powerful creativity to the Della B. Robinson story.

Grit The Band‘s debut single, “Feels Like Heaven” featuring Natasha Arnall will be included in the upcoming feature film.

MIAMI, FL, UNITED STATES, March 11, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — In destinations where music, sunlight, and social ritual have long intersected, a new global platform is taking shape. UMusic Hospitality & Lifestyle and IMI Group, the founders and owners of O Beach, have announced the formation of UMusic Beach Clubs & Lifestyle, a joint venture designed to expand O Beach’s existing footprint while developing a new five-star music-led beach club concept for future projects across the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East.

Expansion will be approached selectively, with active exploration of opportunities across Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. O Beach will bring the current operational leadership to the joint venture, ensuring consistency as the platform enters new markets.

“This is about creating spaces where music doesn’t just soundtrack the experience, but shapes it,” said Robert Lavia, CEO of UMusic Hospitality & Lifestyle. “Travel, hospitality, and music have always been deeply linked. UMusic Beach Clubs & Lifestyle allows us to bring those elements together in a way that feels natural, global, and culturally relevant.”

For Maxi Johal, Chairman of IMI Group, the partnership represents both continuity and progression. “O Beach has always been about a feeling — about how a place makes you want to stay, connect and return,” he said. “This joint venture gives us the opportunity to take that feeling to new destinations around the world, while staying true to the DNA that has defined O Beach from the very beginning.”

As global audiences increasingly seek experiences that seamlessly blend music, travel, and lifestyle, UMusic Beach Clubs & Lifestyle is built to be at that crossroads. • HIP Video Promo Presents: Divergent premiere brand new lyric video ‘Give Her Love’ on VENTS Magazine

Divergent Proves Rock Music Still Has Something to Say on Electrifying New Single “Give Her Love”

JOHNSTON, IA, UNITED STATES, March 11, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Divergent was born when James Richards (guitar, keys, vocals), Mike McAlister (bass, vocals), and Paul Richards (drums, vocals) finally stopped asking “what if” and started asking “what’s next.” This fiery three-piece has been nearly 40 years in the making, built on equal parts nostalgia and nerve. What began as a rekindling between a pair of musical brothers and a high school friend soon became something far more deliberate, a chance to prove that music that veers off the beaten path still exists, and that it still rocks. Creating their debut record allowed the trio to hone their individual talents and fall back into the groove of collaboration. The more they wrote, the more fun they had, and the more excited they were to hop back into the studio and begin work on record number two.

After an impressively brief hiatus, that time has arrived. To begin their next era, the band is releasing its first electrifying singles, which are already generating buzz for their forthcoming sophomore album. “Rev it Up” gave listeners a hit of pure adrenaline, a chance to hit the gas and roar down the highway without looking back. The anticipated follow-up, “Give Her Love,” roars just as loud but channels its power into purpose, empowering silenced voices with a resounding positive spirit.

Deep in the backwoods of Appalachia, “there’s a girl who’s down the railroad tracks,” an unknown soul with “a story that has never been told.” As jarring as it may be, her story is all too familiar—a young woman trapped in a desolate marriage at the hands of an overpowering husband. Injected with a palpable sense of urgency and humming with a hunger for freedom, “Give Her Love” traverses the difficult terrain of abuse with piercing honesty, reflecting the dire circumstances these kinds of situations often create. Yet the electrifying guitar riffs, amplified by a thunderous pulse, channel the rallying power of arena-ready rock to bring people together. It’s as if Divergent is bellowing with all its strength, calling on people everywhere to treat one another with more care and kindness “before it’s too late.” Only when humanity comes together to trade hurt for hope, creating a space where love rises above everything, can stories like hers be laid to rest in the soft mountain soil.

As Divergent unravels this harrowing tale, building tension with each verse, the “Give Her Love” lyric video sets the scene, painting a vivid portrait of the place where things took a turn for the worse. Tucked within abandoned, overgrown stretches of railroad tracks, gravel roads lined with rusty pickup trucks, and rolling hills spotted with lush greenery, a heated encounter brews behind closed doors. Feeling trapped and helpless, the young woman longs to spread her arms wide, to be free to do anything she chooses, to run far away from the torment of a man who only knows how to knock her down. With a little bit of love, things might have turned out differently—but Divergent leaves listeners with a hopeful reminder. When people lead with compassion, even the smallest acts of love can change the course of someone’s story.

From Aviation to Music: Rhett Daneka’s Unconventional Journey

Daneka’s path into music began later in life after years working in aviation. A graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Texas, Daneka pursued a career in aviation soon after graduation. Within four years, he earned his Airline Transport Pilot License and later worked at the largest flight school in Houston, where he trained aspiring pilots and earned the distinction of Gold Seal Flight Instructor.

In the early 1990s, Daneka transitioned into medical aviation, serving as an air ambulance pilot in South Texas. In that role, he transported premature infants from smaller communities to specialized hospitals in Corpus Christi. The work involved critical flights that helped ensure newborn patients could receive advanced medical care.

Years later, an unexpected experience introduced Daneka to music. In 2004, while attending karaoke venues with a friend, he decided to try singing himself. What started as a casual activity soon became a meaningful pursuit after he met Johnny, an 84-year-old quartet singer who became a mentor.

Johnny, who had limited vision but extensive experience in vocal music, helped guide Daneka’s development. The two spent years performing across Houston’s karaoke scene, often visiting multiple venues in a single night. Their regular performances built a strong local following and earned them the nickname “Kings of Karaoke” among Houston audiences.

Following Johnny’s passing, Daneka continued developing his musical career and began recording original songs. He founded the band Daneka Nation, blending country storytelling with rock influences. The project gradually gained traction online as listeners discovered the band’s authentic style and relatable themes.

Rhett Daneka Shares His Perspective on the New Release

“Music was never part of my original plan,” said Rhett Daneka, Founder and Lead Singer of Daneka Nation. “My career started in aviation, and I spent many years flying and teaching others to fly. Discovering music later in life showed me that passion can appear when you least expect it. ‘How Much Love’ reflects the kind of real emotions people experience when they try to rebuild trust in relationships.”
